Democracy, they say is government of the people, by the people, for the people. Now that’s one thing we have no dearth of, PEOPLE, at 1.8 billion we are more than 17% of the world’s population, no small feat that, Is it?
Now may be I am one of those cynical people who are fastidious by nature, but all this democracy business does not make too much sense to me,
Here we have a 1.8 billion people, 42% out of which are living below the poverty line, and another 34% illiterate, the kind of people who haven’t got a one in a zillion chance to land a government/private job, not even a job of a clerk. Well within the confines and the boundaries of this great nation are people who haven’t ever seen a TV, who can’t tell a scooter from a motorbike, or a cooler from a refrigerator, though they are cheap labor, and mind you I say cheap not inexpensive, not low-cost, but CHEAP! We may not want to hire them as domestic helps in our houses, coz they are ‘raw’ and ‘inexperienced’, we can’t let them be anywhere near our cooking ranges, and microwaves, but that does not take away the fact that we treat them as an equal as one of us.
Ha what a sham! Read (shame), double standards abound both in the Indian polity, and society. Who are you fooling guys, how do you justify the value of an illiterate’s vote being equal to a scientist’s, a doctor’s? You can’t, because there is no justification for this.
The fact is the 42% people below the poverty line, and the 34% illiterates continue to procreate for recreation, their population continues to grow, they are the one’s who decide which vested interest party, err Political party will fill their pockets & bank vaults for the next five years, by the power of their vote, but thank god they have no notions pre-conceived or otherwise, and they are an understanding lot of people, just a Rs.100 And a bottle of cheap country liquor is what they expect every five years to mortgage, their own life and the lives of every other educated productive Indian. Needless to say it suits the politicians, just fine, democracy is a game of numbers and you my educated friend don’t account for much, so read those news papers & Blogs and please do indulge in armchair politics and intellectual banter and complain about things being bad, but take my word for it things won’t be bad too long, they will get worse………WORSE.
